British people are well known for being extremely polite, but do they really mean what they say?
After spending the past two weeks in England, I have come to the conclusion that for foreigners, even those who speak English fluently, it must be difficult to understand what we mean. First and foremost, the English language is very difficult to follow as we tend to use many idioms and sayings when we speak. Many Salzburger Nachrichten readers have told me that the only way they can learn these idioms is from my weekly column - as I try to use as many as possible. Nevertheless, if you use one wrong word in the idiom, it doesn't mean anything.
